[DAYTONA BEACH] The Daytona Cubs came into to tonight's game with Palm Beach as the league leaders in overall hitting. Tonight they couldn't chip the ice off their bats with a jackhammer.

The Cubs were only able to muster up four hits off Cardinals pitching tonight as they were shut out by visiting Palm Beach 9-0. Palm Beach pitcher Brad Furnish was nearly un-hittable as he churned through the Daytona lineup early in the game. He left after only four innings of one-hit baseball.
But the Cardinals dominance didn't stop there. Palm Beach used three pitchers out of the bullpen to complete the shutout and move another game ahead of Daytona in the Florida State League standings.
Esmailin Caridad struggled in his second outing of the year. He gave up four earned runs on five base hits. He left the game after four innings pitched. The bullpen didn't fare much better and Cubs pitchers Ryan Meyers and Darin Downs gave up a combined five runs. Caridad (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season. Cardinals pitcher Marco Gonzalez (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen.
On a positive note for the Cubs, right-fielder Jim Adduci reached base for the sixth straight game. Adduci walked twice in the contest.
The Cubs host the Cardinals again at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night in game two of the three game series. For ticket information please call (386) 257-3172.
