I's actually a reprint of a Boston Globe article from 1885, lamenting the loss of superior quality bartenders. It reminds me of another article I wrote which described a great bartender as possessing the last of old-fashioned.
I hope that my customers rank me towards the superior side. I try to be very conscientious without taking any guff from my customers. In other words, I smile pretty when I tell them they are cut-off. I go out of my way to respectful of their conversations. Of course that works both ways, because I never hesitate to politely ignore customers who walk in with a phone in their ear until they finish their conversation.
What I try to do is be polite & professional, but also fun and crazy. At the same time, I try to expose my customers to a new experience when they are at my bar. I am always happy to make suggestions based on what they usually drink. It usually works out, which they love.
Anyhow, just a little morning commentary.

25 Random Things (A Facebook Joint)
Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. (It's really not as hard as it sounds). At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you.

1. I miss my friends & family in Kansas City more than I let on.
2. There are about 125 caps, hats, and visors in the room with me right now.
3. I love ironing clothes like a fat kid loves cake.
4. I cry like a baby every time I watch "Field Of Dreams".
5. Some call it being a pack rat, I call it nostalgia. Every one of the 300 cassette tapes I keep around has a story.
6. Before moving to Florida, I worked as a counselor in a maximum security juvenile detention center. I loved it and hated it at the same time.
7. I remember dates and places like Rainman.
8. Sara and I had our first date at the Golden Lion on October 20, 1998 (long before I worked there).
9. I consider it a blessing that I only had to work during the summer time when I was in high school.
10. Speaking of high school, I won't say it was the best time of my life, but it was pretty fucking cool.
11. I say fuck too much.
12. Ben Folds lyrics make my toes curl.
13. Listening to music is my favorite pastime. It's that nostalgia thing again.
14. Let's talk about music. Not many people know that I started college on a vocal performance scholarship as a classically trained tenor. I also played the trombone for about 10 years. If you ask me to sing a song, I would probably say no. If I did say yes I would probably sing "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" or "Bright Is The Ring Of Words". i sang in public for the first time at age 5 in my Grandma's church in Rich Hill, MO. I went back at 18 and it seemed so small! i found out later that Stephanie Courtney and Valerie Ensor were in the congregation that day. I ended up graduating from high school with them. Okay so that was about 6 facts.
15. I do love karaoke, but that is silly not serious.
16. FACT: Hotels are one of the last businesses that you can start at the bottom and work your way up. When I moved to Florida I started as a bellman and withing two years I was in charge of 25 people and a $600K budget.
17. I love volunteer work and miss being a Boy Scout leader every day. But since most activities are in the evenings and weekends, my job doesn't allow me to do it anymore.
18. Can you believe I was actually paid for two years to sit at a desk with an ocean view and talk golf on the phone all day long? Yeah I can't eaither.
19. Sometimes when I get frustrated at work, I go back in the beer room. When I walk back out towards the front of the restaurant I see the view of the ocean as my customers see it, then I tell myself to suck it up you have a fucking dream job.
20. When i look back on the decisions i made in my life I realize that they brought me to Florida and to Sara, so it is impossible for me to consider them bad decisions.
21. Speaking of Sara, what a lucky day it was when I met her. I was actually out for drinks with a woman with whom I worked. A group of people came into the bar and she said "I think that's my daughter's kindergarten teacher". I feel bad for her, because I blew her off the rest of the night and talked to Sara instead. I still have the shirt I was wearing when we met.
22. On the first night I met Sara, I wrote my number on a matchbook and handed it to her instead of asking her for her number. Single guys, I highly recommend this tactic. Fact is, girls get asked for their numbers all the time.
23. I secretly think it's cute that Sara has to pee within 30 minutes after the start of a trip in the car.
24. I have seen the original Star Wars trilogy at least 150 times.
25. I don't wanna sound like Al Bundy or anything, but I scored four touchdowns on Homecoming my junior year of high school.

PALM COAST, Fla. -- Flagler County authorities said a restaurant owner pistol-whipped and beat a customer who complained that his takeout order was incorrect.Joseph Milano, the owner of Goomba's Pizzeria, has been charged with aggravated assault and battery with a deadly weapon and released on bail.According to a police report, security footage from the pizzeria shows that Milano struck Richard Phinney with a gun. ATTN Locals & JAX Peeps! *Birthday "Schedule"*
This is a Public Service Announcement:
Unless you have been living under a rock (you would have to be to have missed all the reminders I have posted), you know my birthday is on Saturday, the 24th. In order to eliminate confusion and disappointment, I am posting a "schedule" of birthday festivities.
First and foremost, I will NOT be working on Saturday. Historically, I have enjoyed working on my birthday because of gifts and extra tips that result (I love my customers!!). This year, Mrs. Tiki asked me to take the night off, so I have. She will be taking be to Dave & Buster's in Jacksonville for some good times! So anyone in the Jax area that wants to come join the fun and maybe meet me for the first time should come over! I am setting a tentative time of 7pm, but will keep you updated.
For my local peeps & customers, I will be working tonight (Thursday) & Friday night. So if you should feel the desire to come by for well wishes or to observe the "Kiss Me It's My Birthday" button, I will be at the Golden Lion from 4-close on both nights. I will be wearing the button the next three nights because I don't want anyone to miss the opportunity to give me birthday love!!! Between my blackberry and my digi, I hope to create a whole album of birthday smooches!!!
I will no doubt breeze through Finn's Beachside Pub in Flagler Beach tonight after my shift. Friday night David Lane and I are going out on the big town of Flagler Beach to see what kind of trouble we can find. Knowing us, we will end up shooting history's longest game of eight-ball at Walt's or sitting at the bar listening to Merle Haggard on the jukebox. That's usually how we roll. We tell ourselves we are going to get wild and crazy, then just get drunk and trade "I love you bro" declarations. If the stars are aligned just right, Jason might join in and the Three Amigos will ride!
I try to have a good celebration on or around my birthday. so come on out and join the fun!!

Today's Drink Recipe: Banana Rhum Cream
Banana Rhum Cream
2 oz Rhum Barbancourt®
1 oz creme de banane
1 oz light cream
1 cup cracked ice
1/2 cup sliced banana

Weather In The Tiki World
Whoa is me...it's 34 degrees this morning in Flagler Beach!!!! That is cold by Florida standards, and certainly not great for business when you are a bartender in an open air restaurant. But it feels warm compared to -15 (yes, negative 15) in Mrs. Tiki's home town of Berne, IN, -11 (negative 11) in Indianapolis, and 11 degrees in Kansas City, MO (birthplace of the Tiki).
I guess it's all relative....

American Idol
American Idol starts tonight. I still think it's a little lame. I'm not sure why they felt the need to add a 4th judge. I don't really appreciate the vocal styles of most contestants, or that of most "pop" singers. However, last year was the first season I watched in entirety and it became a nice ritual fro Mrs. Tiki and I each week. So, I am happy to say that I am walking the dog, taking a shower, picking up pizza and GETTING EXCITED FOR IDOL!!!!!

Every Tuesday Afternoon we try to meet for food and drink around Flagler Beach. This week the first stopping point will be the upper deck at Finn's Beachside Pub. From there we will move to the Golden Lion deck for food. (Rain location will be downstairs at Finn's then to the Fisherman's Net)
