Repost: Swine flu epidemic fear grows, world on alert

I'm not really on alert, but I thought I would repost the article. Yes 81 people have died in Mexico City. Tragic? Maybe. Do you realize that the population of Mexico City is almost 9 million? Greater Mexico City has around 22 million people, the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere. 22 MILLION!!! .00004% of the population has died from swine flu. That news isn't enough to keep me from leaving my house. I'm no trying to be insensitive here, but if you have 22 million people crammed into a city that is gradually sinking into the soft clay on which it was originially built, it might be time to cull some of the population.

Of course, as my customer NY Jon would say, it might just be the government trying to keep the people in fear....


MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Governments around the world rushed on Sunday to check the spread of a new type of swine flu that has killed up to 81 people in Mexico and infected around a dozen in the United States.

Mexicans huddled in their homes while U.S. hospitals tracked patients with flu symptoms and other countries imposed health checks at airports as the World Health Organization warned the virus had the potential to become a pandemic.

The epidemic has snowballed into a monster headache for Mexico, already grappling with a violent drug war and economic slowdown, and has quickly become one of the biggest global health scares in years...
