I had gone under the knife at Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn the day before and could barely walk from the bedroom to the kitchen to get a glass of water, much less prepare some food. Which I needed badly around lunchtime, considering how little one is permitted to eat prior to a procedure involving anesthesia.
Just when my hunger pangs were at their worst, I heard someone coming through the front door of my apartment. Within a few minutes, my kitchen table was set, complete with fresh bagels and a bowl of hot soup. It wasn't the visiting nurse service or hired help who'd come to my aid. It was my bartender...
