What is Chaotic Good?

In most of my online profiles I use "chaotic good" as a way to describe my self. An example, from my twitter profile: "Keeping the spirit of Loki alive since 1972...Chaotic good bartender, husband, webmaster, hedonist, and Cubs fan living near Daytona Beach, Florida."

What is chaotic good? Those that know, know. For those that don't here is a basic definition, found online.

Chaotic good characters are strong individualists marked by a streak of kindness and benevolence. They believe in all the virtues of goodness and right, but they have little use for laws and regulations. They have no use for people who "try to push folk around and tell them what to do." Their actions are guided by their own moral compass which, although good, may not always be in perfect agreement with the rest of society.

There is also this one-line definition:

A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him.

So, after I color outside the lines I always remember to put the crayons away. :-D

Bartending Basics: Vodka Drinks

On my long wedding weekend I found myself ordering a Baybreeze for TikiWife in a small town Ohio pub. My reaction was "Really?" when the cute bartender told me she didn't know what was in it. I realized that drinks that I consider elementary might not be so simple after all. To that end, I am posting a blog about building vodka drinks. I will also be discussing this tonight on Island Time Radio.

Here you go, a baker's dozen of drinks that you can mostly make with a bottle of vodka and three juices, including the Baybreeze.

I will start with a basic, the Screwdriver (or as I call it, the easiest cocktail in the world).

Screwdriver
1 1/2 oz vodka
orange juice
Combine ingredients over ice in a highball glass. Stir and serve.

Hairy Navel
1 1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz peach schnapps
orange juice
Combine over ice. Stir and serve.

Madras
1 1/2 oz vodka
orange juice
cranberry juice
Combine ingredients over ice in a highball glass. Stir and serve.

Take it up a notch:

Sex On The Beach
1 1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz peach schnapps
1 oz cranberry juice
orange juice
In a large glass, combine all ingredients over ice. Balance with orange juice. Shake and serve.

Oral Sex On The Beach
1 1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz peach schnapps
1/2 oz blue curacao
pineapple juice to balance
In a large glass, combine all ingredients over ice. Balance with pinepple juice. Shake and serve.
I like to joke that people come from miles to try my "Oral Sex On The Beach".

Quickie On The Beach
1 1/2 oz vodka
1 oz peach schnapps
Pour into a shaker with ice. Shake & strain into a shot glass.

Back To Basics:

Cape Codder
1 1/2 oz vodka
cranberry juice
Combine over ice. Stir and serve. Garnish with a lime if desired.

Bad Habit
1 1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz peach schnapps
cranberry juice
Combine over ice. Stir and serve.

Baybreeze
1 1/2 oz vodka
cranberry juice
pineapple juice
Combine over ice. Stir and serve.

Cool Breeze
1 1/2 oz vodka
cranberry juice
pineapple juice
Combine over ice. Top with a splash of club soda.

Greyhound
1 1/2 oz vodka
grapefruit juice
Combine over ice. Stir and serve.

Salty Dog
1 1/2 oz vodka
grapfruit juice
Combine in a shaker with ice. Give it a quick toss and serve in a salted glass.

Seabreeze
1 1/2 oz vodka
cranberry juice
grapefruit juice
Combine over ice. Stir and serve.

Live From Indianapolis!

Is this thing on? Successful and mostly uneventful flight from Orlando. I have had some serious sinus issues the last few times I have flown. I get this sensation above one or both eyebrows that makes me feel as if the bones of my forehead are being ripped out through my face. Descriptive enough for ya? Luckily it is only for about the last 10 minutes of the flight.

Blogging while riding with the in-laws and TikiWife. My attempts at joining the conversation were basically shut of by Mrs Tiki. She is obviously excited to see her mom. Dad in law is driving so I found my music player (I thought I left it behind!) and was just treated to "Mississippi" by Bob Dylan and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Jake Shimabukaro. Now "Here Comes The Sun" is playing but its actually a gray day here. Not complaining.

Anyhow, thought I would check in. Probably a little bored lol.

Saving Hearts In Flagler County

Did you know that the Golden Lion is participating in the "Saving Hearts in Flagler County" campaign next week?

Customers can help Florida Hospital-Flagler build a new Cardiac Catheter Lab, which will one day provide lifesaving procedures, such as stents and angioplasties. Want to get into the spirit of "Talk Like A Pirate Day?" Join us this Saturday (Sept 19) for a Pirate Party on International Talk Like A Pirate Day!

An easy and inexpensive pirate costume:

1. Find a pair of old black pants and fringe the edges with scissors.

2. Tuck in a big gold or white blouse. Tie a red scarf around the pirate's waist and a bandanna around his/her head head.

3. Clip on some gold costume jewelry, then add an eye patch and a pirate's hook (all inexpensive party store finds).

4. Dab on black face paint for a beard and missing-tooth makeup.

5. If you've got a stuffed bird in your toy box, use craft wire to attach it to your pirate's shirtsleeve.

Backstage Pass Florida's Favorites Voting. Please Read!

Longtime friends and fan know that, for the last three years, I have been voted & named Favorite Bartender by Backstage Pass Magazine. Many of you have asked when you can vote for the 2009 Awards. Help TikiTender Give Back: Flagler Fun Coast Bed Race

I am honored to have been invited to participate in the 1st Annual Flagler Fun Coast Bed Race. The event is co-sponsored by Flagler Volunteer Services, Kiwanis Club of Flagler County, and Flagler Beach Rotary Club to benefit youth programs in Flagler County.

Even though most entrants represent businesses or clubs rather than individuals, my contact thought the TikiTender "brand" would be perfect for the event. What an honor! Let's not let her down!!

Team TikiTender needs your help!

Here is an overview of the event:

• Race date is Saturday October 3 in Flagler Beach
• Bed Parade at 1:00pm. Racing begins at 2:00pm
• Teams must build a "bed" according to specification and decorate it as they choose
• Top three times will get prizes
• Prizes are awarded for beauty, creativity, and decorative humor at the parade
• Each team consists of five people, four pushers and a rider
• Pushers must wear pajamas or scrubs, riders must wear a nightgown or nightshirt
• Races will be in flights of two beds each
• Prizes for best decorated bed, best team song or cheer, and of course fastest teams
• Parade route will begin at Flagler Beach City Hall (S. 2nd & Central) proceed South to 5th street, west to Daytona, North again to S. 2nd, finishing back at City Hall

How can you help?

• First & foremost, I need a team. I am pretty sure I have two others and me, so I need two more for sure.
• Second, and no less important, I need sponsorship. There is an entrance fee, and it IS a fundraising event. Businesses or individuals can support the race. All sponsors, large and small will be acknowledged. Businesses, put your stickers, logos, and apparel on my team! In kind sponsorships will be happily accepted also (e.g. materials for the bed).
• Third, presuming I am able to get the team together, I need everyone who is willing to support the team with donations, by spreading the word, or by showing up on race day to cheer us on! I will set up a donate button for those that are long distance supporters
• Fourth, I need extended team members. We are allowed two people to assist at turns. Also, there is no limit to the amount of people that work on the bed. What I really need is carpentry minded people who will help build the bed! Of course I am thinking a Tiki Bar theme!

Drink Recipe: Goombay Smash

The Ingredients:
Dark rum
Coconut rum
Triple sec
Lime juice
Sugar
Pineapple juice
Cherries
Lime wedges
Lemon wedges

The Method:
Drop about 1/2 tsp of sugar into the bottom of a Collins or Hurricane glass. Pour in 1 1/2 oz of dark rum. Stir around in the bottom of the glass to dissolve the sugar. Fill the glass with ice. Add 3/4 oz coconut rum, 1/4 oz triple sec, 1/4 oz lime juice, and 3 oz pineapple juice. Shake vigorously. Garnish with a cherries, a lemon wedge, and a lime wedge. Pretend you are sitting in the Bahamas.
